How much of VM can Percy KO in a Single Turn?

Thanks to @3rdclover for this art piece!

Calculating max damages led to an idle curiosity, and idle curiosity gets out of hand when you have an abundance of numbers and no roll stats to collect. Here we examine what would happen if Percy just went full aggro on Vox Machina, using our level 20 max damage stats, because why not?

This question largely depends on if Grog is raging, and if he is, if Percy targets him. For the sake of this argument, we’re assuming that VM maxed out their HP rolls to get to level 20, and that Grog took a 17th level of barbarian. We’re also not taking any additional or temporary hit points (i.e. from Heroes’ Feast or Inspiring Leader) into account, and assuming neither Keyleth nor Scanlan have any form of shape-changing magic in effect (Wild Shape, Polymorph, etc.). With these assumptions in place, Vox Machina’s hit points are:

  • Grog: 277
  • Pike: 154
  • Vax’ildan: 138
  • Vex’ahlia: 144
  • Keyleth: 153
  • Scanlan: 180

If Grog is raging and Percy targets him first:

A raging, enlarged Grog halves all of the damage Percy can throw at him except psychic damage from Animus and necrotic from Hex. He also can use Stone’s Endurance to reduce his damage by 17, once as a reaction. So, if Percy targets him first:

  1. Bad News, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Hex, and Cabal’s Ruin, Grog uses Stone’s Endurance: Percy does 117 damage, Grog has 160 HP
  2. Bad News, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Hex: Percy does 74 damage, Grog has 86 HP
  3. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Hex: Percy does 52 damage, Grog has 34 HP
  4. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Hex: Percy does 52 damage, Grog is unconscious

At this point, Grog’s Relentless Rage would kick in, but since that relies on saving throws (and therefore has a chance of failure), we’ll assume he fails the roll and Percy continues with the rest of the party, starting with those with the fewest hit points. Note: the chance of Grog failing his Relentless Rage save is 5% (Natural 1 only), then 15% (3 or lower), then 25% (5 or lower), so the odds of Percy failing to knock Grog out and having a raging goliath in his face next turn are still very high.

  1. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Vax uses Uncanny Dodge: Percy does 34 damage, Vax has 104 HP
  2. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Vax has 35 HP
  3. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Vax is unconscious
  4. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Vex uses Uncanny Dodge: Percy does 34 damage, Vex has 110 HP

Here, the final tally is two: Percy only manages to bring down Grog and Vax, and a little less than a fourth of Vex’s HP.

If Percy targets those with the fewest hit points first:

  1. Bad News, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Cabal’s Ruin, Hex, Vax uses Uncanny Dodge: Percy does 128 damage, Vax has 10 HP
  2. Bad News, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Hex: Percy does 100 damage, Vax is unconscious
  3. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Vex uses Uncanny Dodge: Percy does 34 damage, Vex has 110 HP
  4. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Vex has 41 HP
  5. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Vex is unconscious
  6. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Keyleth has 84 HP
  7. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Keyleth has 15 HP
  8. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Keyleth is unconscious

Final tally: 3 unconscious in Vax, Vex, and Keyleth, and a very angry Pike, Grog, and Scanlan waiting to destroy him.

If Grog is not raging and Percy targets him first before moving on to lowest HP:

  1. Bad News, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Hes, and Cabal’s Ruin, Grog uses Stone’s Endurance: Percy does 239 damage, Grog has 38 HP
  2. Bad News, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Hex: Percy does 136 damage, Grog is unconscious
  3. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Vax uses Uncanny Dodge: Percy does 34 damage, Vax has 104 HP
  4. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Vax has 35 HP
  5. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Vax is unconscious
  6. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Vex uses Uncanny Dodge: Percy does 34 damage, Vex has 110 HP
  7. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Vex has 41 HP
  8. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Vex is unconscious

Final tally: 3 unconscious in the twins and Grog, and a full-health tag team of Keyleth and the gnomes with level 9 spells waiting for him.

If Grog is not raging and Percy targets highest HP first:

  1. Bad News, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Hes, and Cabal’s Ruin, Grog uses Stone’s Endurance: Percy does 239 damage, Grog has 38 HP
  2. Bad News, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot, Hex: Percy does 136 damage, Grog is unconscious
  3. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Scanlan has 111 HP
  4. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Scanlan has 42 HP
  5. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Scanlan is unconscious
  6. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Pike has 85 HP
  7. Animus, Sharpshooter, Violent Shot: Percy does 69 damage, Pike has 16 HP

Final tally: 2 unconscious in Scanlan and Grog, and a full health Team Half-Elf waiting for him with a very angry (albeit seriously injured) Pike.
