Level 8 Update: More Feats and ASIs

Thanks to @Queddajaw for this art piece!

ALL THE ABILITY SCORE IMPROVEMENTS! No, but seriously, as Matt said at the end of Episode 49, all of the Mighty Nein receive their choice of either an ability score increase or a feat this level. In addition, all the spellcasters get additional spell slots or spells known (or both), and both clerics get domain features and improvements to their Destroy Undead abilities.

Because of the wide variety of possibilities, we chose to delay our level update until we could narrow down the options, but as you’ll see, there are still a few unknowns. All of the Mighty Nein (except Yasha) have now maxed out their primary ability scores (barring certain special items), and Caleb, Nott, and Caduceus have each tacked on a feat to their already-diverse skill sets.

Beau: ASI, +2 to Dexterity score

  • Max HP: 68

  • Dexterity bonus is now +5

  • All dexterity-based ability checks and saving throws increase by 1

  • Ki point total increases to 8

  • AC increases to 20

  • Attack bonus increases to +8

Beau decided to increase her dexterity score to its maximum possible score of 20 (outside of certain items). This increases her AC, initiative, attack rolls, and all ability scores and saving throws that rely on dexterity.

Caduceus: War Caster

  • Max HP: 69

  • One additional 4th level spell slot (total of 2 per day)

  • Can now prepare 13 spells per day from the Cleric spell list (in addition to domain spells)

  • Advantage on Concentration checks to maintain spells

  • Can perform somatic components of spells even with weapons/shields in one or both hands

  • Can use a spell with a single target and action casting time for opportunity attacks

  • Destroy Undead now affects creatures up to CR 1

  • Potent Spellcasting

As Taliesin mentioned on Talks last week, Caduceus took the extraordinarily useful feat War Caster. Not only does it grant him advantage on all constitution saves to maintain concentration on spells, he can perform spells that require somatic components even when wielding a shield and a weapon, and he can choose to cast a spell in lieu of taking an attack of opportunity. This can be any spell, as long as it is a single target and has a casting time of an action. This feat was clutch for both Scanlan and Keyleth in the last campaign. (“You’ll leave when Burt Reynolds tells you to leave!”)

In addition, Caduceus can now prepare 13 spells per day in addition to his domain spells, and gains an additional 4th level spell slot for a total of two per day. He also gets an improvement to his Destroy Undead feature: any undead that fail a wisdom save and are CR 1 or lower are now destroyed. Undead higher than CR 1 are Turned as normal, and any undead that make the save remain unaffected. Finally, he gets a bonus from his domain: Potent Spellcasting. Whenever Caduceus does damage with a cantrip, he can now add his wisdom modifier to the damage.

Caleb: Feat (Unknown)

  • Max HP: 47

  • Two additional spells in his spellbook from the Wizard spell list

  • One additional 4th level spell slot (total of 2 per day)

  • Can now prepare 13 spells per day from his spellbook

Caleb also appears to have taken a feat, but at the moment, the best we can do is narrow things down to feats that do not increase any ability scores (except perhaps his already maxed-out Intelligence score). He also adds two free spells to his spellbook (of 4th level or lower), and can cast an additional 4th level spell per day for a total of two per day. We did see several new spells from him in episode 50. However, given that he just finished copying a set of spells from the spellbook he found in Halas’ extradimensional manor, we cannot say which he took while leveling and which he got from the spellbook without further confirmation from Liam. It's also possible we have not yet seen all the new tools at his disposal.

Fjord: ASI, +2 to Charisma Score

  • Max HP: 82

  • Charisma bonus is now +5

  • Spell and falchion attack bonuses increase to +8

  • Spell DC increases to 16

  • All charisma-based ability checks and saving throws increase by 1

  • One additional spell known from the Warlock or Hexblade spell lists

Fjord chose to increase his charisma score up to the maximum possible value of 20. Like Beau, this means his attack (including spell attack) bonuses increase to +8. All his charisma-based ability checks and saving throws increase by 1, and his spell DC increases to 16. Finally, he gets to add a spell to his spells known list, but unlike Caleb and Caduceus, he does not gain an additional spell slot. Since Fjord used only spells we've seen from him before last episode, we can't say what he took just yet. He could have also chosen to drop a spell and replace it with something else (Travis has done this in the past), so he could have as many as two new spells this level.

Jester: ASI, +2 to Wisdom Score

  • Max HP: 67

  • Wisdom bonus is now +5

  • Spell attack bonus increases to +8

  • Spell DC increases to 16

  • All wisdom-based ability checks and saving throws increase by 1

  • One additional 4th level spell slot (total of 2 per day)

  • Can now prepare 13 spells per day from the Cleric spell list (in addition to domain spells)

  • Destroy Undead now affects creatures up to CR 1

  • Divine Strike

Like Fjord and Beau, Jester chose to increase an ability score up to the maximum possible value of 20, but she chose wisdom. All her wisdom-based ability checks and saving throws increase by 1, her spell attack bonus increases to +8, her spell DC increases to 16, and she can now prepare 13 spells per day in addition to her Trickery domain spells. Like Caduceus, she gets an additional 4th level slot per day for a total of two and gets an improvement to her Destroy Undead feature. Finally, she also gets a bonus from the Trickery Domain: Divine Strike. Once per turn, when she hits a creature with a weapon attack, she can infuse the strike with an additional 1d8 poison damage.

Nott: Squat Nimbleness

  • Max HP: 65

  • Movement speed increases to 35 ft

  • Proficiency in Athletics

  • Advantage on Athletics/Acrobatics checks to escape a grapple

  • Dexterity bonus is now +5

  • All dexterity-based ability checks and saving throws increase by 1

  • AC increases to 18

  • TTBB1000 attack bonus is now +9

  • Fury of the Small damage increases to 8

  • One additional spell known: Invisibility

Nott chose to take the Squat Nimbleness feat (Xanathar’s), which increases her movement speed by 5 feet, gives her proficiency in Athletics (she already had Acrobatics), and advantage on any Athletics or Acrobatics checks to escape a grapple. This feat also increases her dexterity score by 1, getting her to the maximum possible value of 20. Like Beau, this increases her AC, initiative, attack rolls, and all ability scores and saving throws that rely on dexterity by 1. She also gets her usual increase to her Fury of the Small damage, and she gets to add one additional spell to her list of known spells. This time, however, she is not limited to solely enchantment or illusion spells, and can choose any Wizard spell of 1st or 2nd level. From what we saw in episode 50, it appears that she chose Invisibility.

Yasha: Unknown

  • Healing Hands healing increases to 8

  • Necrotic Shroud damage increases to 8

We haven’t seen anything from Yasha yet, so we can’t say if she took an ability score increase or a feat. However, we do know that her racial ability damage and healing both go up to a total of 8.
