Doppelgangers are shifty creatures. No, really, they’re literal shapeshifters that take on the appearance and surface thoughts of another for their own nefarious purposes. They either work alone or, in the case of the ones who ambushed the Nein, small groups. Doppelgangers can be a terror in social situations where they can read the thoughts of an unsuspecting creature, study its mannerisms, and take on its identity, unbeknownst to anyone else.

In the relative seclusion of the mirrored room, however, the mirror room doppelgangers couldn’t put their 14 Charisma to use, and had to resort to their melee attacks. Their abilities were beefed up from the standard doppelgangers, who have two slam attacks at their disposal. They had a bite attack that dealt additional acid damage and claws for grappling, giving them the ability to land a critical hit on a natural 18 on the grappled creature. With their increased attack and damage, these doppelgangers generally seemed far more feral than a doppelganger that had been around society and culture for a while.

While the alternate “dimension” added plenty of confusion for the party (aided by the panic of splitting the party), it’s saying something that fighting a twisted version of yourself was a significantly less horrifying experience than what the Nein had already been through to get here.
