All Rolls Statistics, Episode 100 Update

All Rolls Statistics, Episode 100 Update

Episode 100 makes a fine checkpoint to see how many total d20 rolls and crits we’re at in the series. Let’s start with what each member contributes to the d20 total, individually:

All Rolls

There have been 8987 player d20 rolls, including guest players, since the start of the stream. Of these, the current members of Vox Machina have contributed 8477 rolls. Vax leads the way here, with 1711 total d20 rolls over 100 episodes (20.2%), likely because he is constantly stealthing and checking for traps, not to mention his signature “dagger dagger dagger.” Grog’s Reckless Attacks have pushed him into second at 1587 (18.7%), and Vex is third at 1504 (17.7%). Pike and Tary trail largely because of a much lower number of episode appearances, and Keyleth and Scanlan tend to roll fewer d20s simply because most of their attacks tend to be spells that rely on saving throws rather than an attack roll. In addition, none of these characters are typically taking point on any dungeon-crawling.

Denizens of the Moonbrush Additional Stats

Here are some additional goofy little stats facts about the cumulative probabilities: I went ahead and repeated this sequence of events (rolling 157 d20s) 10,000 times, and in all those cases, a Natural 20 count of 14 only happened 138 times. This means that the likelihood of rolling 14 Nat 20s with a perfectly balanced die is at best only 1.4%. In contrast, rolling 8 Nat 20s under those circumstances is about ten times more likely, occurring 14.4% of the time. Pretty unusual!

Rolling 10 Nat 1s out of 157 is a little less impressive, but still unlikely: the likelihood of such an event is 9.9%.

Thanks to @eponymous-rose for the additional statistics and explanation!

Crits of Episode 61-Denizens of the Moonbrush

Since this week’s episode tied Episode 55 for the highest number of Natural 20s at 14, and set the record for Natural 1s at 10, we decided to give the critical hits & failures their own post. When you take into account the number of d20 rolls (157), Vox Machina rolled a Natural 20 about 8.92% of the time, and a Natural 1 around 6.37% of the time. These are also both records.

So no, it wasn’t just your imagination or an effect of rolling more times overall. There were a lot of crits in this episode (by statistics, you’d expect a rate of 5%, or 7-8 rolls for each case).

For the record, for the first 60 episodes, Percy has the highest overall Natural 20 rate of Vox Machina, and his is only 6.9%. Trinket has the highest Natural 1 rate at 5.21%.

Double Crit

anonymous asks: How many times have there been critical fails on advantage rolls (two natural 1's in a row) or crits on disadvantage (two natural 20's in a row)? The only one I know of is Matt rolling two 20's in a row for Lord Briarwood attacking Percy with disadvantage in Ep. 34 (at 3:07:56).

The one you mention is, by our records, the only time that’s happened!  We also can’t find any times where a character had two Natural 1s on advantage rolls.  If you’re interested in more stats about Crits, head on over to our Rankings and Running Stats page.

Ranked Stats of 38: Echoes of the Past

With the number of ranking-based stats we have, we decided to switch up our format just a little bit. Instead of simply posting the crits of each week, we’re going to also post the latest episodes’ relevant running stats, as well. The Rankings and Running Stats of the full show will always be available here, but now you’ll also be able to see the relevant ranked stats of each week right here. Enjoy!

Crit Overview of Episodes 01-33

Because SOMEONE broke the metaphorical Crit Counter last night (¬_¬ @executivegoth), we’re spending our morning fixing it. While we’re doing that, we figured it was also a good opportunity to take a look at some records over the first 33 episodes of the show.

Most Nat20s in a single episode by a player character: Percy, 7, ep33. Taliesin easily took it away in episode 33 with seven Natural 20s, including switching away from the Golden Snitch. This record breaks the tie of four Natural 20s, earned by both Percy and Vex in Episode 19 vs. Rimefang. (Laura technically held the record for most Player crits with five, if we include Trinket.) Matt’s record also stands at 5, reached and held in episodes 31 and 32, respectively.

Most Nat20s over the full show by a player character: Percy, 36. Previously held by Vex in episode 32 with 31 to Percy’s 29. It should be noted that Matt has 41 Nat20s at this point. This should come as little surprise; he’s rolling almost twice to each player roll. That said, Percy is only 5 behind the DM. Seriously. Broken. (Vex+Trinket = 36. Laura and Taliesin are tied; Percy and Vex are not.)

Most Nat1s in a single episode by a player character: Thorbir, 6, ep21. Because Wheaton. Behind him sits Vax at 4 from episode 11. (Note that these 6 fails are STILL less than Percy’s 7 wins. The devil’s work.) Matt’s most Nat1s: 6, in episode 31.

Most Nat1s over the full show by a player character: Vax’ildan, 25. After Percy’s disgusting crit wave, the rip current of fails brought him to 19, enough to secure second in this category. Vax already had a hearty lead before this, though. (Matt has rolled the most at 29, but, again, DM rolls more.)
