Does Vox Machina have enough money to buy another carpet?

anonymous asked: with the loot they have from kraghammer, the dragons lair in vaselhiem and the rest of the money they have from the keep. Do they have enough money to actually redo the flying carpet that was destroyed.

Short answer

Nope.

Long answer

Noooooooooooooooope.

Legit answer

Combining the dragon loot from both Rimefang and the previous-fought dragons with the rest of the party funds, we are informed in episode 24 (0:16:03) that Vex and Vax had to pay their servants out-of-pocket, since they did not have the 600 gold to pay them from the party treasury. Even the funds received from Nodstoc Greyspine were only 25k, of which 10.5k was quickly divided among the party members as a stipend (ep24, 2:23:31). Some funds might be obtained by way of Whitestone’s treasury, but considering the city’s plight before (and just how shady it is for them to take the money and run), it’s unlikely they’ll walk away with more than 10k. That brings them back to, at best, 30k gold.

The problem with Wondrous items is that they are Very Rare for a reason. Even if they did slap down 50k and gave it to a group of arcane masters to re-enchant, the process would take an in-game year before it would be ready. Keep in mind that between the party’s arrival in Kraghammer to the Winter’s Crest Festival in Whitestone, only 68 days have passed. Approximately a year and a half has passed since the full campaign started. For most adventuring parties, powerful items such as the Carpet of Flying need to have already existed before the band formed in order for such items to serve any use.

Could the party still scrounge up 50k and pay for a re-enchanted carpet? Sure, but it’s probably not the best investment. In episode 14, they walked away with 10 items and 9 potions for 49.2k. With that in mind, it seems hard to justify buying a single item that won’t be available for a while when one could obtain all of those items instead for the same price. Really, their best option is to continue to let their DM know that they reeeeeeeeally want flying items. Maybe Vox Machina will stumble across a potion recipe, or defeat a hag that just happened to have a Wondrous but Merely Uncommon Broom of Flying.

Transformations

As we approach the coming new year, we think it’s only fair to consider the transformations that have happened to all of us this year. Whether these transformations take part through the impact that others have had on us (“I turn him into a rat”), or these changes happen through our own volition (e.g., Alter Self, Wild Shape), we’d like to celebrate–

Wait, what do you mean that’s not…

Arrow, Arrow, Arrow.

Anonymous asked: How many arrows has Vex gone through? I don’t remember ever seeing her buy any, but ammo is a constant worry for Percy. Does she just have a million in the bag of holding, or does she have a never-discussed “infinite ammo” perk?

Vex does go through a lot of arrows. The good news is that arrows are easy to come by; a quiver of 20 is a single gold piece. Additionally, half of all unenchanted arrows used can be recovered and reused. Granted, this occurring is a lot lower due to Hail of Thorns, Lightning Arrows, and the Blazing Bowstring, but arrows are still much easier to find than bullets.

To answer your question, no, Matt has made it clear that ammunition, including arrows, are a finite supply. It’s not entirely clear how many she keeps on her person (thanks to @EliseMMorrison for pointing out that she keeps the rest in the Bag of Holding, Ep22, 0:59:00), but 20 arrows is usually more than enough for individual encounters until more have to be retrieved. As for buying them, being in a town and stating that you spend 5 gold to buy 100 arrows outside of the game is usually good enough.

Welcome, TheSingingBadger and Kathatherine!

CritRoleStats started out as a relatively small endeavor, in which I would live-tweet monster stats as they happened and then flipped through the archived videos to figure out how many times the dice rolled a Natural 20. However, as the show continues and more people find more things they want to know, it’s become quite a bit for one person to handle, even with the invaluable support of the network of Critter volunteers.

With that, I’d like to formally welcome two volunteers who are also now the public face of Crit Role Stats here on Tumblr: @thesingingbadger and @kathatherine. They have been instrumental in the behind-the-scenes part of the blog, cleaning up the notes we have, checking and double-checking stats, and handling the digital paperwork when I’ve been too lazy to deal with it. They will also be helping to answer questions and make posts, in addition to helping organize the group effort of knowing all the things.

And, as always, we want to continue to thank the Critters who continually help with logging, tracking, and updating stats behind the scenes. This would not be possible without all the hard work you all put in!

Stoneskin!

Stoneskin is a form of insurance: most of the time when you pay for it, you don’t actually use it, but it’s fairly handy when you do use it. Despite his rare appearances on the front line, the resident dragonborn sorcerer certainly placed a lot of value in it. Updated through episode 36.

How much does Scanlan owe Percy for the Pepperbox?

anonymous asked: I kinda want to know how much Scanlan owes Percy for his Pepper box.

A generic Pepperbox is listed for 450 GP. Even with Orthax’s assistance, we could conceivably go even higher considering the cost of molding metal for a first-time design, as well as any other complications in building it. For now, we’ll say that the Pepperbox by itself cost 450 GP and a series of weeks to build.

However, enchanted weapons are a bit more expensive than generic weapons, and the Pepperbox had TWO enchantments in place: one frost (bonus +1) and one fire (bonus +1). Since these are separate rather than stacked enchantments, the Pepperbox would still be a +1 enchanted weapon. Using Pathfinder’s rules for magic item creation and this list of magical weapon enhancements (see Ranged Weapon Special Abilities), we determine that adding those two enhancements to the Pepperbox would cost a bare minimum of 4000 GP and 4 days.

On top of all that, 4450 GP is only the minimum up-front cost of the gun. That’s failing to calculate the cost of fixing it every time it broke (one repair since the stream started is 225 GP, plus pre-stream), the cost of obtaining black powder (400 GP from Victor plus pre-stream), and the cost of metal to forge custom bullets (350 GP in episode 23, and gathered scrap metal elsewhere). Gunslinging is an expensive hobby. Most expensive of all is the time required to rebuild a new Pepperbox from scratch: the bullets alone take up a significant time to forge.

TL;DR: We estimate that it will cost Percy at least 4450 GP, and at least three weeks of uninterrupted, problem-free work time to rebuild an enchanted Pepperbox… Assuming, of course, that the memory of its construction didn’t leave with Orthax’s spirit.

Counterspell!

Oh, that wondrous anti-magic reaction. Reminder that a spell of 3rd level of lower automatically fails. If the spell is higher than the level of the counterspell cast, the counter must succeed on a DC of 10 + the spell’s level, or the spell follows through.

Updated through Episode 36. Thanks to TheSingingBadger, Kathatherine, Rusty-Diamond, and DragonMustang01 for their assistance!

Polymorphed Trinket

anonymous asked: How many times has trinket been polymorphed

Surprisingly few, considering the number of circumstances in which a bear would stand out:

  1. Rat (Ep01, 1:18:15) Polymorphed by Keyleth to avoid a barroom brawl.
  2. Kitten (Ep08, 1:27:58) Polymorphed by Keyleth to transport across the Sea of Glass and Bone.
  3. Human (Ep36, 2:01:06) Polymorphed by Keyleth to participate in the pie-eating contest.

Even Seeming has been relatively rare.

  1. Dark Green Fur (ep17, 2:12:43) Forest camouflage against the hydra.
  2. Donkey (ep28, 2:29:24) First day of Whitestone infiltration.
  3. Donkey (ep29, 1:44:07) Second day of Whitestone infiltration.
  4. Donkey (ep30, 1:58:38) Third day of Whitestone infiltration.

In most cases when traveling with him has been difficult, Trinket has either been moved around using Fly:

  1. (ep05, 3:04:39) Getting Trinket back from the duergar war camp.
  2. (ep11, 2:35:19) Sneaking into Yug’Voril to battle K’Varn.
  3. (ep13, 1:32:18) Escaping from Yug’Voril.
  4. (ep17, 2:01:15) Flying over Vasselheim’s walls to pursue the hydra.
  5. (ep27, 3:00:25) Crossing the bridge from Westruun.

Or, simply left behind:

  1. (ep01, 1:02:23) While the party explores Kraghammer.
  2. (ep05, 0:42:17) Outside the duergar war camp.
  3. (ep24, 2:00:44) With Vax while Vex retrieves money from Kraghammer.
  4. (ep25, 0:49:01) In Emon’s stables.
  5. (ep26, 2:27:17) With Percy while the party hunts a roc.
  6. (ep29, 2:37:12) In Sir Stonefell’s cellar.

There was also the time they had to get him on the airship via crane (ep15, 1:27:25).

Poor bear.
