Villains Gallery: Underdark and Trial of the Take

Villains Gallery: Underdark and Trial of the Take

Thanks to @brinmataujall for this art piece!

We had an anonymous critter request a while back for us to create a list of villains and information about their intentions and deeds. There have been a lot of big bads over the course of 99 episodes, so many that we can't do them justice in one post. We're breaking them up by story arc, starting with the Underdark and Trial of the Take villains.

Underdark

Duergar General

  • Duergar fighter
  • Led troops at the duergar warcamp

  • Killed by Clarota

  • Duergar fighter
  • Ruler of the duergar- married to Queen Ulara
  • Served K’varn the Mad
  • Captured and tortured Kima of Vord
  • Killed by Scanlan in his own throne room

Monster Analysis: Black Pudding and Hook Horrors

Monster Analysis: Black Pudding and Hook Horrors

In our attempt to finally catch up on analyzing all encounters in the history of the show, today we’re going to roll back to when the party was level 9!

Black Pudding

  • First Appearance: 05 The Trick About Falling
  • Armor Class 7
  • Speed 20 ft, climb 20 ft
  • Blindsight 60 ft, Passive 11
  • Immune to acid, cold, lightning, and slashing damage
  • Reaction: splits into two with half health if receives slashing or lightning damage
  • Immune to blind, charmed, deafened, exhaustion, fright, and prone
  • Suggested Average, Max HP: 85, 130
  • 360 damage received across all puddings

The chatroom selected selected the ooze as one of several creatures presented by Matt to throw at the party. Black puddings are the most corrosive and dangerous of the ooze family. Like all oozes, they hunt for organic meals with regard for their appetite over their safety. The ooze in this case appears to have had some part of K'Varn's experiments. The poor ogres charged with transporting it were merely catalysts for this battle, allowing the party to "open Pandora's box."

Character Causes Battle

Pyrot3ch-nick asked: How many times has VM gone into combat due to one or two characters’ actions?

To answer that, we’ll have to be a little myopic. Often Vox Machina’s intention was to battle in the first place, but it was one or two characters’ actions that set the battle in motion. Updated to Episode 94.

Total: 21

I’ve heard Pike’s infamous mic bump during the episode “Denouement” mentioned multiple times. When exactly did this happen?

Ep35, p2. 0:36:10

Wondering how stats were generated for the party? Was it “roll 4d6 drop 1, assign numbers” or something? I’m getting a 5e group together and am curious; it’s sometimes hard to get decent stats out of some of the roll methods. Thanks!

Matt confirmed on Reddit that they roll 4d6, drop 1, arrange, and reroll them all if they don’t add up to at least 70.

In-Party Conflict

Anonymous Asked: I'm kind of curious if you guys know how many times the members of Vox Machina have attacked each other intentionally - like for example Scanlan punching Percy in the stockade, or Grog attacking Percy for the skull?

For the purposes of this answer, we aren’t including attacks that are intended for other creatures-like Area of Effect spells where a party member wasn’t the target- or if the damage dealt to a party member was unintentional.

Monster Analysis: Ogres

  • First Appearance: 01 Arrival in Kraghammer
  • Armor Class 11
  • Speed 40 ft
  • Darkvision 60 ft
  • Average, Max HP: 59, 91

Ogres are pretty dumb. Their greed and tribe-like behavior can be used to convinced to fight with other monsters, from goblins, orcs, and giants (the last who ogres basically worship). However, someone who may consider themself especially clever would be wise to not to overplay their hand confusing an ogre, as ogres are also prone to lose their temper with the slightest provocation.

Funny enough, over the course of Critical Role, ogres have been shown to be fodder for bigger and badder things, particularly in the Underdark. There’s always a bigger fish, right?

  • Ep01 (2:24:34) Vox Machina quickly dispatched two ogres as they were fleeing for the lives from the Naga abomination.
  • Ep03 (1:52:08) One ogre joined the trolls over the edge of the cliff, shortly thereafter becoming an aboleth snack.
  • Ep05 (1:53:47) Two ogres, transporting a contained Black Pudding, are taken down hard by the party, shortly before their cargo makes its presence known.
  • Ep18 (1:46:17) The half-ogre is first creatures taken down of the orc band (by a maniacal, critting-like-crazy pajama-flap Percy). This is followed by the orcs stating they would not care to face Rimefang. Vox Machina does not give them the option, anyway.

Now, if only if I could get Smash Mouth out of my head after writing this…

Critmas Episodes

anonymous asks: Hi, quick question, what episodes are critmas episodes and at what time do they start?

According to our Running Times table, Critmases occurred on:

On a related note, we’re quickly approaching the one-year anniversary of Critical Role, as well as the nearest Critmas to it. We’re attempting to catalogue as many gifts as we can before that happens, but, it’s a sizable project in so short a time. If you’d like to volunteer to log through an episode of Critmas (or more!), shoot us an ask or an email, and we’ll set you up. Thanks!
