Level Ups

anonymous asked: Which episodes or video revealed that the group leveled up.

At the beginning of Episode 9, Matt reveals that all party members leveled to 10. From that point on, the party didn’t have the same number of experience points, meaning they didn’t level up together. This, naturally, makes it difficult to gauge when everyone levels.

Tiberius, Vex, Vax, and Keyleth seem to have reached level 11 by episode 16. Percy, Scanlan, and Grog catch up to them over the next few episodes. Grog reaches level 12 shortly after his second bout with Kern (+2 to Con).

For the most part, the character cards shown on the stream are a good indicator, provided they are updated. Recently, however, Orion tweeted before episode 27 that he had leveled up (+2 to Wis). The card that was shown on the stream was still the same as before. It is unknown if anyone else has leveled, as well, since they haven’t really announced leveling in the most recent episodes. None of the cards have been updated in the past few episodes, either. (You can be sure they’ll be updated here when they are!)

Update: ashesofvalkan points out that Travis spent his Ability Improvement Score on the Great Weapon Master feat when he leveled. She also points out the Vex probably leveled before episode 26, given that Vex began cast Cure Wounds as often as possible. Thanks!

Twitch VODs

crowdedwindowsills asked: Never subbed to a twitch before... I know the youtube video of ep 68 is offline but I am dying to catch up before Thursday. If I subbed now is the video for the subbers working or are they waiting too?

If you are a Twitch subscriber, the VOD is available the instant a show starts streaming, and continues to be available for about two weeks after it’s been broadcast. For just $5 a month, we’d definitely recommend it!

KO Rankings

kamenrider7 asked: What does the unconscious ranking mean on the knockout? Is it a counter? Also what do they values in parentheses mean? Please and thank you!

Based on this post, a higher rank indicates more KOs for that PC. In the case of a tie, the higher-ranked individual either reached their number of KOs first (e.g., Scanlan was knocked unconscious before Percy, even though they both have 3 total), or had more KO-like circumstances (i.e., the numbers in parentheses).

The numbers in parentheses indicate circumstances that fit some, but not all, of the definition of being knocked unconscious (e.g., Tiberius turned to Stone or Grog reduced to 0 hp but still alive by Death Ward). Hope that clarifies!

Pike's Strength

weneedboldstrokes asked: Sorry if this has been addressed. Tonight I noticed that Pike's strength is 13. The PHB says that 15 strength is required to wear plate. Is this an oversight or a homebrew? It's cool if you don't know.

We got this question back before Pike donned the Gauntlets of Ogre Power, which raised her Strength to 19. Nonetheless, because Pike is a War Domain Cleric, she is proficient in heavy armor, which means the plate armor doesn’t cause ALL her rolls to be at disadvantage. Instead, she is merely terrible at stealth and any dexterity rolls, as we have seen.

Now, the Players Handbook States that, “if the Armor table shows “Str 13” or “Str 15” in the Strength column for an armor type, the armor reduces the wearer’s speed by 10 feet unless the wearer has a Strength score equal to or higher than the listed score.” So, back when Pike had 13 Strength, she was not incapable of wearing the armor. She just should have been slower while wearing it.

However, since Pike has used her full Gnomish speed (25 ft.) in several instances, we know that Matt and co. seemed to be houseruling that particular aspect of wearing plate mail. This may be a holdover from Pathfinder, in an attempt to compromise, or it may just be an oversight. At any rate, a Pike that can only move 15 ft. in 6 seconds is probably not a Pike that would be very helpful in a clutch healing moment, like using Revivify on Grog during the K’varn battle.

But as long as Pike has the Gauntlets, speed will not be an issue. Now if only she could get her sneaky plate armor from Gilmore!

Elder Brain HP

anonymous asks: Has anyone estimated how many hit points the elder brain had?

From our monster analysis, we figured out that Vox Machina dealt 320 damage to the Elder Brain before deciding on self-preservation. Matt’s exact words was that it “was not on death’s doorstep.” This is not all the surprising, considering the sheer power generations of illithid minds would generate.

We were informed that it was looking “pretty rough” (code for “over halfway there”), but we can’t image they were particularly far past the halfway point. The value that we think it actually had was “more than you were able to deal with the entirety of an illithid colony bearing down.” However, if we had to estimate a specific value, we’d say that it had a bare minimum of 575 HP.

Conversations with Jarett

Not enough times, that’s how many!  Also:

Critmas Episodes

anonymous asks: Hi, quick question, what episodes are critmas episodes and at what time do they start?

According to our Running Times table, Critmases occurred on:

On a related note, we’re quickly approaching the one-year anniversary of Critical Role, as well as the nearest Critmas to it. We’re attempting to catalogue as many gifts as we can before that happens, but, it’s a sizable project in so short a time. If you’d like to volunteer to log through an episode of Critmas (or more!), shoot us an ask or an email, and we’ll set you up. Thanks!

How many times has Sam been late?

anonymous asks: How many times has Sam shown up after the stream has started?

Thanks to work, LA traffic, and the character background video now playing prior to the stream, Sam arrived at Critical Role after the stream started 21 times.  Those episodes are:

  • 11
  • 15-18
  • 23-31
  • 36-41
  • 43

How can Grog take half piercing, slashing, and bludgeoning damage?

anonymous asks: For some reason I'm unable to view the character sheet information. What makes it so that Grog takes half damage from piercing, slashing, and blunt weapon damage?

Hmm… We’ll look into it. The sheets are due for an update from us, anyway, but if you’re able to view Dropbox files, you should be able to see what we have.

Anyway, your question! It’s actually one of the benefits of the barbarian class. According to the PHB (48), rage grants the following benefits:

  • Advantage on STR checks and STR saving throws
  • Bonus damage to melee STR attack rolls (determined by barbarian level)
  • Resistance to piercing, bludgeoning, or slashing damage.

Additionally, although Grog took Path of the Berserker (which is great for dealing all the damage), you might also consider The Path of the Totem. At third level, a Totem of the Bear warrior has resistance to ALL damage during their rage, except psychic damage. (Intelligence damage is never good for barbarians, no matter what your path is.)
