Quick Answers 50

This is our fiftieth Quick Answers post! We appreciate your enthusiasm and curiosity, Critters. Don't forget to check out our FAQ, Running Stats, Rankings, and Character Sheets. If you have other questions, you can use our new Contact form or Tumblr Ask.

Can you tell Matt and the cast that the numbers they said are wrong, so they can fix them?

We could, but we also prefer to lead by example and observe & record without interference. While they can throw our numbers off from time to time and have a drastic impact on the story, mistakes are part of the game, and the story goes the direction it goes. If the players want to contest or fix those, we’ll leave it up to them to do so. It’s their game and their story.

Well, can you at least publicly confirm said mistakes with us, so we can tell them to fix them?

See above about leading by example. We’re not going to publicize their mistakes. Think about how it would make you feel to have a stranger reprimand you for not using a particular character ability after your D&D game. Even if they meant it to be helpful, it comes across as invasive and nitpicky. When in doubt, err on the side of empathy and kindness!

Hey I just wanted to know if there was any way for those of us without Twitter to enter the giveaway? Thanks!

Alas, no. Tumblr is a logistical nightmare for trying to run a giveaway for us. Good news, though! Creating a Twitter account is free and pretty simple!

Hey! I couldn’t seem to find any secret santa for critters that is exclusively done online, so I made one myself, and would really appreciate it if you could boost it to anyone who wants to join! <3 the url is @critrolesecretsanta.

There you go!

What We Know About Kynan Leore: A List

eclairqueen asked: I was wondering if it would be possible to get a list of timestamps of when Kynan is mentioned/focused on?

We were going to write our own summary of the roguish rogue, but we figured we couldn’t do any better than the description from the DM himself:

“A young man, low born and motherless, dreaming of purpose and meaning to his existence. A father beaten by his own failures and loss, venting his own regrets on his son. The boy wakes to a burning drive to change his fortune, to make every step he takes count to saving this crumbling life that surrounds him. This is the day he rises above a butcher’s son to begin his own journey. He’s seen what heroes look like, what they can do. He will become one.”

Kynan’s history has been less secretive to us than the other characters we’ve focused on, so rather than an in-depth analysis, we present: the full list of timestamps of when Kynan has been mentioned or present. Updated through Episode 73.

Monks and Vox Machina

Anonymous asked: Have the party ever encountered a monk, NPC, PC, Hostile, Neutral or Ally.

Vox Machina met Earthbreaker Groon, monk and head of the temple of Kord in Vasselheim, in episodes 23 and 43.  Kern, who sparred with Grog in episode 23, trained with Groon, which allowed Kern to take two levels of monk (Kern utilized Dodge, which isn’t available to Level 1 monks). They also defeated a monk in episode 26, along with the old lady mage and The Broker.

Update: Several critters have been kind of enough to point out that, before the stream, Yuri Lowenthal guested in a game as Ghostfist, a dwarven monk. If D&Diesel can be considered canon, Vex and Grog have also met The Headmistress, a human monk played by Jessica Chobot.

I’ve heard Pike’s infamous mic bump during the episode “Denouement” mentioned multiple times. When exactly did this happen?

Ep35, p2. 0:36:10

Wondering how stats were generated for the party? Was it “roll 4d6 drop 1, assign numbers” or something? I’m getting a 5e group together and am curious; it’s sometimes hard to get decent stats out of some of the roll methods. Thanks!

Matt confirmed on Reddit that they roll 4d6, drop 1, arrange, and reroll them all if they don’t add up to at least 70.

Chroma Conclave Foreshadowing

Chroma Conclave attack?

The Story of Vox Machina

(0:13:50) Our heroes then locate and enter the home of General Krieg, finding a brainwashed servant, and a hidden passage that leads to a teleportation circle.  Using the device, they are transported to a distant cavern, high in a range of frost-covered mountains... and an incredible hoard of gold, jewels, and fine trinkets.

Across the room are 4 obsidian orbs set within the rock. As one is touched, a giant eye appears from within the black crystal and a voice erupts, calling for a "Brimsythe," and noticing the unfamiliar folk, growls, "Intruders... I know your face now. He is a fool, and so are you, insect." The orbs all crack simultaneously, becoming inert.

Kern vs. The Potion of Stone Giant Strength (and Grog)

@MCBE117 asked: How much did the potion of Giant strength help Grog during the pit fight?

The Potion of Stone Giant Strength increased Grog from STR 19 (+4) to 23 (+6). This mod not only increased his attack modifier, but also increased the damage of every hit that made contact (+2).

In order to calculate how effective the potion was, we first need to find out how many attacks wouldn’t have landed without it (DC 19, so 19 or 20 would miss). Out of 18 successful attacks, three hit at 19 or 20. The total damage of these attacks add up to 24.

Next, we have to factor in the extra damage each landed attack dealt thanks to the potion. Using the attack and damage rolls we have stored here, we can see that there were three times that he didn’t remember to apply his +2 modifier (6 damage, should have been 7 or 8). Removing these three, the two 19s, and the one 20 from the list, 12 successful hits times two means 24 damage Kern wouldn’t have taken otherwise.

So, Grog would have dealt 94 damage on his own, with the potion accounting for 48 of his 142 damage. Considering Kern didn’t have to use his Relentless Endurance until he hit 134, we’d say that the potion definitely had an influence on the final fight. Don’t forget to check out our fight analysis, dice odds, and play-by-play of the rematch!

Critmas Episodes

anonymous asks: Hi, quick question, what episodes are critmas episodes and at what time do they start?

According to our Running Times table, Critmases occurred on:

On a related note, we’re quickly approaching the one-year anniversary of Critical Role, as well as the nearest Critmas to it. We’re attempting to catalogue as many gifts as we can before that happens, but, it’s a sizable project in so short a time. If you’d like to volunteer to log through an episode of Critmas (or more!), shoot us an ask or an email, and we’ll set you up. Thanks!
