Villains Gallery: Underdark and Trial of the Take

Thanks to @brinmataujall for this art piece!

We had an anonymous critter request a while back for us to create a list of villains and information about their intentions and deeds. There have been a lot of big bads over the course of 99 episodes, so many that we can't do them justice in one post. We're breaking them up by story arc, starting with the Underdark and Trial of the Take villains.

Underdark

Duergar General

  • Duergar fighter
  • Led troops at the duergar warcamp
  • Wielded the Firebrand Warhammer
    • Taken after his death by Grog
  • Killed by Clarota

King Murghol

  • Duergar fighter
  • Ruler of the duergar- married to Queen Ulara
  • Served K’varn the Mad
  • Captured and tortured Kima of Vord
  • Killed by Scanlan in his own throne room

Queen Ulara

  • Duergar arcane caster
  • Ruler of the duergar- married to King Murghol
  • Served K’varn the Mad
  • Captured and tortured Kima of Vord
  • Escaped the throne room with Grog, was eventually caught by VM
  • Banished by Scanlan before returning to be interrogated, killed by K’varn the Mad in the course of this interrogation

Who was it that killed each individual member of the conclave with what attack? (for fanart purposes)

  • Brimscythe: Vax’ildan, Unknown (presumably a dagger)
  • Umbrasyl: Grog, Bloodaxe
  • Vorugal: Vex’ahlia, Fenthras
  • Thordak: Vax’ildan, Whisper
  • Raishan: Kerrek, Dusk Warhammer

Did Vex drop Demons for her favorite enemy? I was rewatching the episode where Vex and Percy were in the library and Laura brought it up but then said never mind.

Nothing has been stated on the show about it, as far as we know.

I would like to know how many times Laura has used swear words OOC and IC on the show?

We have no problem with strong language, but we still want to keep the language (relatively) clean on the site. Also, we no longer take tracking requests that require a full-show rewatch. (Friendly reminder to also check out our Frequently Asked Questions page!)

Birds of a Feather

Qui11iam asked: How many birds has the cast flipped over the course of the show?

While the rogue has definitely been responsible for the most “daggers” thrown, the rest of the cast has shown that they can throw their own fair share.

Number of party birds: 51

Number of Liam birds: 24

Thanks to agent-of-chaotic-order, @BabbaForrest, BillieblueJean, burdenedwithnopurpose, @EBalensuela, holpike, icecream-s-coops, @jeritchie3, rusty-diamond, and @SilentEnGee for their help compiling this list!

Updated through Episode 61.

When did Vex get her bag of holding?

We’re aware of three Vox Machina Bags of Holding:

  1. The main BoH, carried by Grog since before the stream (also RIP, Dork the Ox).
  2. Tiberius’, which he picked up from Draconia (Discussed in Ep14, 0:26:12)
  3. The refrigerated BoH, granted to Take Team 1 (which included Vex) to harvest Rimefang’s bits (Ep18, 0:34:35), and presumably given as a permanent gift thereafter.

Which video did Liam tell the story about how he felt embarrassed because nobody responded to his email about playing D&D again? Big fan guys!

Thanks! Liam’s told the story several times, but you may be content to hear it at SDCC 2015.

Percy's Initiative Bonus

Anonymous Asked: Do you know if Percy has anything that gives him a bonus on initiative? I saw that he got an initiative of 28 in the ToT episodes (when nat 20ing on initiative), even though his dex modifier should only have been +6.

Updated! The Manual of Quickness in Action bumped him up to his +6 modifier. At the time of the Trial of the Take, Revision 1.1 granted the Gunslinger an extra +2 to initiative at level 7, putting Percy at +8.

However, with the latest revision (1.2), Percy can now add his full proficiency bonus to initiative roll, granting him +11 at level 13!

Special thanks to @FrankIncer for sorting us out!

Zahra's History

stonecoldboss asks: Hey do you know what ep we learned about Zahras back story (if we have)

We know very little about Zahra’s history. Most of what we find is in Episode 18, where she tells Vex about the strained relationship she had with her father (1:18:46). We don’t know the name of her patron is, though we do know that he or she is heavily tied to the moon.

Monster Analysis: Ogres

  • First Appearance: 01 Arrival in Kraghammer
  • Armor Class 11
  • Speed 40 ft
  • Darkvision 60 ft
  • Average, Max HP: 59, 91

Ogres are pretty dumb. Their greed and tribe-like behavior can be used to convinced to fight with other monsters, from goblins, orcs, and giants (the last who ogres basically worship). However, someone who may consider themself especially clever would be wise to not to overplay their hand confusing an ogre, as ogres are also prone to lose their temper with the slightest provocation.

Funny enough, over the course of Critical Role, ogres have been shown to be fodder for bigger and badder things, particularly in the Underdark. There’s always a bigger fish, right?

  • Ep01 (2:24:34) Vox Machina quickly dispatched two ogres as they were fleeing for the lives from the Naga abomination.
  • Ep03 (1:52:08) One ogre joined the trolls over the edge of the cliff, shortly thereafter becoming an aboleth snack.
  • Ep05 (1:53:47) Two ogres, transporting a contained Black Pudding, are taken down hard by the party, shortly before their cargo makes its presence known.
  • Ep18 (1:46:17) The half-ogre is first creatures taken down of the orc band (by a maniacal, critting-like-crazy pajama-flap Percy). This is followed by the orcs stating they would not care to face Rimefang. Vox Machina does not give them the option, anyway.

Now, if only if I could get Smash Mouth out of my head after writing this…
