Villains Gallery: The Chroma Conclave

Villains Gallery: The Chroma Conclave

Thanks to @blacksalander for the art piece!

We had an anonymous critter request a while back for us to create a list of villains and information about their intentions and deeds. There have been a lot of big bads over the course of 99 episodes, so many that we can't do them justice in one post. We're breaking them up by story arc, continuing with the dragons of the Chroma Conclave.

The Chroma Conclave

Thordak, The Cinder King

  • Ancient red dragon
  • Head of the Chroma Conclave
  • Originally from the Shifting Sands, was defeated by Devo’ssa after attacking Ank’harel and thought dead.
  • Washed up on the Opash’s island.
  • Was tortured and experimented on by Opash for years before overpowering the necromancer.
  • Found the knowledge of the rituals to become a dracolich, and set out for Tal’Dorei to gain more power and find arcane users powerful enough to perform the ritual.
  • Invaded Raishan’s territory, and made a deal to help her cure her Soul Curse in exchange for her allegiance
  • Invaded Tal’Dorei, razing the Verdant Expanse before being defeated by Kima of Vord, Allura Vysoren, Drake Thunderbrand, and their compatriots, and banished to the Fire Plane.
    • Destroyed Byroden, killing Vax’ildan and Vex’ahlia’s mother.
  • Spotted by VM on their trip to the Fire Plane during Keyleth’s AraMente
  • Grew larger and more insane during his 15 years in the Fire Plane before breaking out with Raishan’s help and destroying Pyrah.
    • Returned with a Heartstone implanted with an Ember Seed buried in his chest.
    • Raishan broke him out earlier than expected due to her concerns about his increasing insanity- Winter’s Crest rather than the summer solstice.
  • Razed the city of Emon and began turning the Cloudtop District into his lair, forcing the surviving citizens to serve him.
    • Was slowly turning the city into a volcano
    • Laid several elemental dragon eggs beneath the former castle, having reproduced asexually
  • Killed by Vax’ildan in a tunnel leading to his main lair.

Brimscythe, The Iron Storm

  • Young adult blue dragon
  • Served on the Council of Emon as a human with the name General Krieg Tristan.
  • Member of the Chroma Conclave.
  • Lair located somewhere in the Cliffkeep Mountains. Can be entered via a portal in the basement of his home in the Cloudtop District.
  • Killed by Vax’ildan after VM’s discovery of the portal to his lair.

Chroma Conclave Foreshadowing

Chroma Conclave attack?

The Story of Vox Machina

(0:13:50) Our heroes then locate and enter the home of General Krieg, finding a brainwashed servant, and a hidden passage that leads to a teleportation circle.  Using the device, they are transported to a distant cavern, high in a range of frost-covered mountains... and an incredible hoard of gold, jewels, and fine trinkets.

Across the room are 4 obsidian orbs set within the rock. As one is touched, a giant eye appears from within the black crystal and a voice erupts, calling for a "Brimsythe," and noticing the unfamiliar folk, growls, "Intruders... I know your face now. He is a fool, and so are you, insect." The orbs all crack simultaneously, becoming inert.

In-Party Conflict

Anonymous Asked: I'm kind of curious if you guys know how many times the members of Vox Machina have attacked each other intentionally - like for example Scanlan punching Percy in the stockade, or Grog attacking Percy for the skull?

For the purposes of this answer, we aren’t including attacks that are intended for other creatures-like Area of Effect spells where a party member wasn’t the target- or if the damage dealt to a party member was unintentional.

Another set of Quick Answers!  Lots of reminiscing this time around.

Do you guys happen to remember when Percy said he wanted to visit the temple of the Raven Queen?

Episode 42 (3:36:43). He never made the trip, but we imagine Taliesin would have been very interested to see traces of her influences again, especially since he saw her influence in a different campaign.

In what episode did Grog trip Vax, and what were their rolls for it?

Episode 5 (1:43:50). Grog: 24. Vax: 22.

Monster Analysis: Githyanki

Thanks to Melissa Kelt for letting us use her art! And check out the full piece here; it’s amazing.

First Appearance: 40 Desperate Measures

Many years ago, the mind flayers enslaved a race whose name was lost to history. After many attempts at uprisings, the leader Gith led her people to temporary freedom. However, differences between her and another leader named Zerthimon led to hostilies that resulted in two separate races with idealogical differences: the contemplative Githzari, led by Zerthimon, and the warlike Githyanki, ruled by Gith.

The Githyanki live by the sword, sworn to absolute vengeance against the Illithid, the Githzeri, and everyone else, in that order. They travel the Astral Plane across the multiverse, plundering victims and leaving them just alive enough to rebuild so they can be plundered again. Warriors must master the silver sword, a psionic blade considered sacred to Githyanki culture. As one cannot age in the Astral Plane, young Githyanki train in military academies hidden on the Material Plane. They must fell a Mind Flayer before they are permitted to rejoin the ranks in the Astral Plane.

Perhaps of highest interest, during the uprising against the Illithid, Gith’s second-in-command (a lich named Vlaakith) sought the aid of Tiamat, the goddess of evil dragons. In the resulting agreement, Ephelomon, the red dragon consort of Tiamat, pledged the alliance of all of his kind with the Githyanki. While later generations of either group have not always sought to uphold this alliance, the Githyanki and Red Dragons have rarely if ever found themselves on opposing sides of conflict.

Could the individual trapped in the skull grant a Wish? It’s not entirely out of the question. Githyanki casters tend to by psionic rather than arcane, but who knows what an ageless individual can learn. However, by now it should be clear that a wish, even one without negative strings attached, would not have been able to rid Tal'Dorei of the Chroma Conclave. The individual trapped inside had even less incentive to follow through, assuming he ever planned to grant the wish. Fortunately, we’ll never actually know what would have happened should he have been freed…
