Early Multiclassing

bearcubjay asks: So what class levels do each of the team have now? I believe Percy and Vax are multiclassing?

We’ll update the full character levels on the Character Sheets page. However, we do know that only Vex’ahlia has multiclassed (12 ranger, 1 rogue). Vax’ildan is still a pure rogue, and Percy is a full gunslinger (though the fact that he took the Magic Initiate feat with Warlock magic has thrown off a few Critters to this fact).

Zahra's History

stonecoldboss asks: Hey do you know what ep we learned about Zahras back story (if we have)

We know very little about Zahra’s history. Most of what we find is in Episode 18, where she tells Vex about the strained relationship she had with her father (1:18:46). We don’t know the name of her patron is, though we do know that he or she is heavily tied to the moon.

Dragon Sizes

anonymous asks: What is the order of the sizes (biggest to smallest) of the Chroma Conclave?

The only one we’re certain about is Thordak, who we’re told is much larger than the rest of the Conclave (Colossal!). The rest, we presume they’re all roughly the same size, but we can speculate on who’s bigger based on the challenge rating of each color dragon. So, if we had to guess order, we’d go:

  1. Thordak (Colossal Red)
  2. Raishan (Gargantuan Green)
  3. Umbrasyl (Gargantuan Black)
  4. Vorugal (Gargantuan White)

Update: Now that all four dragons have been fought (and Raishan's curse has been factored in), here is their sizes as presented:

  1. Thordak (Colossal Red)
  2. Umbrasyl (Gargantuan Black)
  3. Vorugal (Gargantuan White)
  4. Raishan (Gargantuan Green)

Necrotic Damage: Always Fatal?

anonymous asks: In The Sunken Tomb (44) Vex dies instantly from being hit with enough Necrotic damage to take her down to 0. But, in Whispers (29) Percy also goes down to 0 from the Banshee's slash that deals Necrotic damage, yet doesn't die. Is it a rule in 5e that Necrotic damage that takes you down to 0 is an auto-kill? Because I seem to recall it was the same way during the K'varn fight with Grog, and that was also the fear at the end of the Ziggurat fight? Or maybe Matt just forgot about it?

Necrotic damage, by itself, is simply a type of damage. As anti-life energy, it is harmful to living creatures, but may have little or no effect on undead or constructs. Many attacks that use necrotic damage also have an instant death effect tied to them, but dealing necrotic damage to a player character with low HP isn’t necessarily the kiss of death for them.

From the non-instant-kill side, you bring up the Banshee’s Corrupting Touch (average of 12 necrotic damage). A PC who fell victim to Keyleth’s Blight would not die automatically, either (unless they were somehow a nonmagical plant, as explained in the spell description). Beholders also have a non-instant-kill necrotic eye ray called the Enervation Ray (36 on a failed, half on save).

However, the attacks you mentioned above all have some sort of death effect tied to them. There’s the Death Ray that Beholders have (55 on a fail, half on success). The spell description for Finger of Death explains that victims who drop below 0 HP instantly die and become a zombie under the control of the caster on their next turn. The trap surrounding the champion of the Raven Queen (the goddess of death) also killed those who fell below 0 HP.

So, necrotic is bad news, but really, whether it’s instant or not depends on the spell description.

Time Zones

anonymous asks: Dear CritRoleStats, do any of you know the time change Vox Machina underwent while using transport via plants? any of the times Keylith has used it would work. I want to use that info to make some informed guesses about the size of Exandria.

According to Episode 42 (3:34:37), there is approximately a four hour difference between Vasselheim (6-6:30 AM) and Whitestone (10-10:30 AM). (We assume that neither continent has time change of any sort.)

Can we get a list of all the Critmas gifts?

We’re working on it, and are nearly done!

What’s the average d20 roll?

We can’t answer that one until we have all of the natural rolls calculated. While we’ve calculated proficiencies the best we can, we’re waiting until we have confirmation on all skills to begin that side of the project.

Save Against the Beholder Odds

IsYitzack returns, with the odds on how often the party could have saved against the beholder’s eye ray attacks!

Matt was surprised to see how well the party was rolling against his beholder on Thursday. I was wondering how surprised he should be. And the answer is very. I’ll be using DCs of 16 for all eye ray attacks (including the eyeball that came out of the column to shoot at Scanlan). The tendrils coming from the wall only required a DC 15 Dex Save to avoid. (They didn’t last long enough to require acrobatics or athletics checks to escape their grasp.) Finally, I’ll be using the Saving Throw values calculated by CritRoleStats in their character sheets.

They made 14 of 19 saving throws. That happens 15,763,665,194,354,589,813 in 2^16*10^16 events (Mathematica does arbitrary integer and fraction arithmetic so long as the RAM holds out). That is approximately 2.41% of the possible ways will come out this good. I would expect 9.82 successes (out of 19) instead. There is a 3.35% chance of doing this well or better (see Figure 1). I wouldn’t be too terribly concerned about doing this well, but it is much better than I would have expected. The most likely outcome: 10 successes at 19.3% chance of happening.

Figure 1: The plot of the likeliness of making n saves. The X axis is the number of saves (out of 19), while the Y axis is the percent chance of that many saves happening. Vox Machina in The Sunken Tomb fall very far to the right, at 14 on the X axis.

For my initial calculations, I started my computer Sunday night to begin printing out every possible combination of fails and saves of the 19 ray attacks, using the brute force method. Turns out that after reducing the probabilities from out 20 and 400 to the simplest fractions, there are still 2^16*10^16= 65,536 * 10^16 possibilities. I stopped my computer Monday morning and it was nowhere near finishing. I took inspiration from what I had done whilecalculating the odds of Vex’s resurrection ritual (Ed: coming soon!) and worked on a network of nodes to arrive at a final result in much less time.

Most of the chances of success are fairly straight-forward. Critical failures and successes would have been failures or success without being aided in any of these cases. Grog has Danger Sense which he can always use to gain advantage on Dex saves. Travis stated that “I’m not raging yet” as he rolled the dice; while he theoretically should still have it when he isn’t raging, since he didn’t claim it, I won’t claim it for him in this calculation.

Figure 2: A graph of the probability of rolling a specific number on a d20.

Figure 3: A graph of the odds of beating a DC of n. Keep in mind that DC 2 is technically the lowest possible, as 1 always fails.

Thanks again to IsYitzack for this, and the resurrection odds!
