Crit Role Stats does Science: Pencil Edition

Last night, the CRS team watched the new Loot Crate video. After commenting on how much forearm strength would be required to hang on to a mechanical gryphon, the discussion eventually led to one Travis Willingham and how much strength one would need to apply to bend a mechanical pencil.

After failing to bend our own pencils in this manner, the conversation eventually led to the following setup:

To test, we got a bucket, a bunch of weights, a gap between tables, and a handful of various wooden and mechanical pencils of various brands. Viewers of the Periscope witnessed as I then balanced the bucket over each of these pencils with various weights (starting WAY too high at first) until we found that approximately 18 lbs adequately bent (not snapped) a BIC mechanical pencil (the same brand we believe Travis used).

After the conclusion of the test, we realized that we had calculated torque (18 pound-inches) instead force. With each pencil 6 inches long, the gap between tables at 3.25 inches, and the weights placed at exactly halfway (1.625 inches), we calculate that the bucket of weights exerted approximately 11 lbs of force, or about 49 Newtons. It’s likely that he generated a little bit more than that, too, in order to do so with one hand so quickly. (Personal experience says that that is still really hard to do, even driven from the anger of beard checks.)

All Rolls Graph Update (with analysis!)

Hi guys! I have battled through hordes of computer problems, end-of-semester grading, and work deadlines to bring you an update to the all rolls graphs and critical frequencies! Since 50’s a pretty obvious milestone and the damage graphs are proving more time-consuming than I had originally anticipated, we figured we’d give the graph-lovers out there something to tide them over. For the sake of this, we’re only discussing the regular PCs, and these graphs only include regular PCs, no guest PCs. You can find the original post with all the graphs here.

Taliesin Nat 20s

Anonymous asked: Could you find the number of times Taliesin Jaffe has rolled a natural 20 since the beginning of the new year as opposed to the number of times he has rolled a Nat20 before that? Thank you, love your blog to bits!

Sure, that’s easy enough!

Taliesin rolled 38 natural 20s up through the Winter’s Crest episode. Since the new year, he’s rolled 6 more in the regular Thursday games, plus one as the goblin monk Mezek when he decapitated that poor bard, for a total of 7.

First Broken Glass

Anonymous asked: In the 50th episode, when Laura corrects Matt about Cornelius's (sp?) chopping of firewood, Taliesin mentions that it is the "first one" in 50 episodes. Was he referring perhaps to her first time correcting Matt, or the first time they'd caught Matt in a contradiction, or something else I can't think of?

Taliesin said that in reference to the glass that Liam knocked over (1:38:23) and broke after cracking up at Laura calling out Matt.

To head off most of these, we finally present our static Frequently Asked Questions page. We highly encourage you to take a look at it and the other page links on the right side of site; you may find an answer you’re looking for!

Anonymous asked: does vex have two lvls in rogue because shes been using a bonus action to hide

Still just one level, so she doesn’t have Cunning Action yet. She’s been using Skirmisher Stealth, the ability she learned from Seeker Asum before the trek to Whitestone: If you are hidden at the beginning of your turn, you may use a bonus action at the end of your turn to hide.
