Villains Gallery: The Chroma Conclave

Villains Gallery: The Chroma Conclave

Thanks to @blacksalander for the art piece!

We had an anonymous critter request a while back for us to create a list of villains and information about their intentions and deeds. There have been a lot of big bads over the course of 99 episodes, so many that we can't do them justice in one post. We're breaking them up by story arc, continuing with the dragons of the Chroma Conclave.

The Chroma Conclave

Thordak, The Cinder King

  • Ancient red dragon
  • Head of the Chroma Conclave
  • Originally from the Shifting Sands, was defeated by Devo’ssa after attacking Ank’harel and thought dead.
  • Washed up on the Opash’s island.
  • Was tortured and experimented on by Opash for years before overpowering the necromancer.
  • Found the knowledge of the rituals to become a dracolich, and set out for Tal’Dorei to gain more power and find arcane users powerful enough to perform the ritual.
  • Invaded Raishan’s territory, and made a deal to help her cure her Soul Curse in exchange for her allegiance
  • Invaded Tal’Dorei, razing the Verdant Expanse before being defeated by Kima of Vord, Allura Vysoren, Drake Thunderbrand, and their compatriots, and banished to the Fire Plane.
    • Destroyed Byroden, killing Vax’ildan and Vex’ahlia’s mother.
  • Spotted by VM on their trip to the Fire Plane during Keyleth’s AraMente
  • Grew larger and more insane during his 15 years in the Fire Plane before breaking out with Raishan’s help and destroying Pyrah.
    • Returned with a Heartstone implanted with an Ember Seed buried in his chest.
    • Raishan broke him out earlier than expected due to her concerns about his increasing insanity- Winter’s Crest rather than the summer solstice.
  • Razed the city of Emon and began turning the Cloudtop District into his lair, forcing the surviving citizens to serve him.
    • Was slowly turning the city into a volcano
    • Laid several elemental dragon eggs beneath the former castle, having reproduced asexually
  • Killed by Vax’ildan in a tunnel leading to his main lair.

Brimscythe, The Iron Storm

  • Young adult blue dragon
  • Served on the Council of Emon as a human with the name General Krieg Tristan.
  • Member of the Chroma Conclave.
  • Lair located somewhere in the Cliffkeep Mountains. Can be entered via a portal in the basement of his home in the Cloudtop District.
  • Killed by Vax’ildan after VM’s discovery of the portal to his lair.

Hey guys, thanks for all your hard work! Out of curiosity, do you think you could count the Blindspot references in Critical Role? Sam made a Blindspot pun one episode and I about died.

Thanks! For future reference, we track ALL media-related references over here. Here are the Blindspot ones:

  • (Ep32, 1:18:17) Matt: You’ve been too busy, being in someone’s blind spot
  • (Ep48, 2:37:05) Scanlan: Starring Ashley Johnson: Blindsight.
  • (Ep48, 2:58:13) Sam: Ashley Blindside.  Travis: Blindspot.
  • (Ep59, 1:00:05) Sam: Let Pike get rid of this blind spot so we can all be together again!

As a parallel to “Times a member of Vox Machina has consumed something” you should do a “Times a member of Vox Machina has been consumed” e.g. Grog last session or Scanlan in the ice worm.

Luckily, there haven’t been many times where a member of Vox Machina was consumed by an enemy.

  • Scanlan (Ep39, 0:40:50) Purple Worm
  • Vax’ildan (Ep39, 1:22:34) Frost Worm
  • Vax’ildan and Scanlan (Ep54, 3:09:44) Umbrasyl (though technically they transported themselves into his stomach)
  • Grog (Ep62, 1:14:40) Feymire Crocodile

Birds of a Feather

Qui11iam asked: How many birds has the cast flipped over the course of the show?

While the rogue has definitely been responsible for the most “daggers” thrown, the rest of the cast has shown that they can throw their own fair share.

Number of party birds: 51

Number of Liam birds: 24

Did Keyleth hurt Umbrasyl?

Keyleth did not directly deal any damage, but she did run the very important role of support.

Pre-battle, she:

  • Helped conceal the trap
  • Ensured that the would not be spotted by the dragon by taking an aerial survey of it herself.
  • Cast Heroes’ Feast, which granted the party much-needed temporary HP and immunity to fear
  • Cast Protection from Energy, which provided Grog with acid resistance for one very useful round.

During the battle, she:

  • Cast Bones of the Earth, which elevated Grog and Pike to have a better shot at Umbrasyl.
  • Forced Umbrasyl to burn through one of his three legendary resistances, which will be huge going into what will undoubtedly be a tough fight in Umbrasyl’s lair.
  • And to top it off, damage taken as an Earth Elemental means that as a half-elf, Keyleth is still at full HP to provide support for the second half!

Umbrasyl Predictions

openthepocketwatch asked: Sorry if you're already answering this, but based on the state/location of both the party and Umbracil, how many rounds would it take to take down Umbracil at this point if a) Grog Vax and Scanlan or b) the whole party did their average amount of damage during a round? I'm wondering how long Vax and Scanlan can survive in there before Umbracil is taken down.

No worries, we’re answering it now! Note that many of these assumptions, while we think they are reasonable, will probably wind up being completely different from what actually happens in episode 55. Vox Machina, Matt, and the dice always manage to surprise us.

General Assumptions:

  • Average damages per hit from this sheet. Note that Grog’s current average damage may be slightly higher than this- there have not been enough uses of the Titanstone Knuckles (or Enlarge) to increase his average over all episodes yet.
  • Our estimated HP for Umbrasyl of 1156. This estimate came by multiplying the average ancient HP of an ancient black dragon (367) by 3.15. This number came by dividing Rimefang’s health total of 630 by the average adult white dragon HP (200).
  • Umbrasyl makes it back to the lair, resulting in a time delay that allows both Grog’s rage and Vex’s Boots of Haste to wear off.
  • Matt keeps the initiative order from the first half of the battle (only matters for finding the killing blow).
  • Grog uses his second Frenzied Rage of the day (giving him 3 attacks per round).
  • Vax always uses his bonus action for an offhand attack.
  • Percy reloads at the pistol’s rate (since Bad News is currently broken).
  • Vex leaves Trinket in the necklace and uses both of her attacks per round.
  • Keyleth, Scanlan, and Pike all hit once per round.
  • No one misses a turn due to being unconscious, dead, or out of range.

If we don’t take missed attacks into account:

  • If Vax, Grog, and Scanlan are forced to face Umbrasyl on their own, Grog kills him at the top of the 5th round.
  • If somehow the rest of the party manages to catch up, Vex kills Umbrasyl at the top of the 3rd round.

If we assume a hit rate similar to the first half of the battle:

  • If Vax, Grog, and Scanlan are forced to face Umbrasyl on their own, Grog kills him at the top of the 6th round.
  • If somehow the rest of the party manages to catch up, Umbrasyl still dies in the 3rd round, but Vax gets the killing blow instead of his sister.

Update: Anonymous submitted, “In a grand upset, Scanlan gets the killing blow on Umbrasyl using Vicious Mockery.” Heeheeheehee.
