Villains Gallery: The Chroma Conclave

Villains Gallery: The Chroma Conclave

Thanks to @blacksalander for the art piece!

We had an anonymous critter request a while back for us to create a list of villains and information about their intentions and deeds. There have been a lot of big bads over the course of 99 episodes, so many that we can't do them justice in one post. We're breaking them up by story arc, continuing with the dragons of the Chroma Conclave.

The Chroma Conclave

Thordak, The Cinder King

  • Ancient red dragon
  • Head of the Chroma Conclave
  • Originally from the Shifting Sands, was defeated by Devo’ssa after attacking Ank’harel and thought dead.
  • Washed up on the Opash’s island.
  • Was tortured and experimented on by Opash for years before overpowering the necromancer.
  • Found the knowledge of the rituals to become a dracolich, and set out for Tal’Dorei to gain more power and find arcane users powerful enough to perform the ritual.
  • Invaded Raishan’s territory, and made a deal to help her cure her Soul Curse in exchange for her allegiance
  • Invaded Tal’Dorei, razing the Verdant Expanse before being defeated by Kima of Vord, Allura Vysoren, Drake Thunderbrand, and their compatriots, and banished to the Fire Plane.
    • Destroyed Byroden, killing Vax’ildan and Vex’ahlia’s mother.
  • Spotted by VM on their trip to the Fire Plane during Keyleth’s AraMente
  • Grew larger and more insane during his 15 years in the Fire Plane before breaking out with Raishan’s help and destroying Pyrah.
    • Returned with a Heartstone implanted with an Ember Seed buried in his chest.
    • Raishan broke him out earlier than expected due to her concerns about his increasing insanity- Winter’s Crest rather than the summer solstice.
  • Razed the city of Emon and began turning the Cloudtop District into his lair, forcing the surviving citizens to serve him.
    • Was slowly turning the city into a volcano
    • Laid several elemental dragon eggs beneath the former castle, having reproduced asexually
  • Killed by Vax’ildan in a tunnel leading to his main lair.

Brimscythe, The Iron Storm

  • Young adult blue dragon
  • Served on the Council of Emon as a human with the name General Krieg Tristan.
  • Member of the Chroma Conclave.
  • Lair located somewhere in the Cliffkeep Mountains. Can be entered via a portal in the basement of his home in the Cloudtop District.
  • Killed by Vax’ildan after VM’s discovery of the portal to his lair.

Who was it that killed each individual member of the conclave with what attack? (for fanart purposes)

  • Brimscythe: Vax’ildan, Unknown (presumably a dagger)
  • Umbrasyl: Grog, Bloodaxe
  • Vorugal: Vex’ahlia, Fenthras
  • Thordak: Vax’ildan, Whisper
  • Raishan: Kerrek, Dusk Warhammer

Did Vex drop Demons for her favorite enemy? I was rewatching the episode where Vex and Percy were in the library and Laura brought it up but then said never mind.

Nothing has been stated on the show about it, as far as we know.

I would like to know how many times Laura has used swear words OOC and IC on the show?

We have no problem with strong language, but we still want to keep the language (relatively) clean on the site. Also, we no longer take tracking requests that require a full-show rewatch. (Friendly reminder to also check out our Frequently Asked Questions page!)

If Vax gets surprise with all those nice assassin bonuses, how much damage (on average), can we expect him to do?

For the sake of this, we’ll say that Vax attacked immediately in order to get a surprise attack, and didn’t have time to cast Hunter’s Mark.

  • 42 (Sneak Attack) + 4 Slashing + 8 Psychic + 8 + 16 Divine Smite  = 78 Average Crit Damage
  • 42 (Sneak Attack) + 4 Piercing + 8 Psychic + 8 + 10 (Sharpshooter) = 72 Average Crit Damage

What is the max damage Vax has done?

Vax’s most damaging single attack was in Episode 79 (2:12:09), dealing 102 damage against Thordak. For any damage related questions, check out either our All Rolls chart, Average/Total Damage Dealt chart, or Damage Taken chart over on our Running Stats page!

What level Wizard is Shaun Gilmore? And what wizard school does he study?

He’s a sorcerer, confirmed by Matt.

Where did Vax get the Potion of Invulnerability he used during the Thordak fight?

In Vorugal’s lair (Episode 72, 0:59:00).

Was it ever known where the cast used to play D&D before the stream?

According to Liam in episode 12, past games took place “in the dark and fantastical cave, also known as Travis’s dining room.” This doesn’t mean ALL games were there, but we can assume a good portion were there.

How much can Grog bench press and/or lift?

Per 5e’s lifting and carrying rules (PHB 176), with the Titanstone Knuckles’ Enlarge activated, Grog can bench 2880 pounds = 24 Strength * 30 lift * 2 Large * 2 Goliath’s Powerful Build

When asked on Talks Machina about it (Ep02), Travis projected that Grog could bench two dairy cows. We learned that dairy cows usually weigh between 1200 and 2000 pounds each. So, an Enlarged Grog could theoretically bench two lightweight dairy cows.

Has Vax ever been able to use Dimension Door, through a feat or item? My friend is getting caught up and says he used it.

He has, by means of the Cape of the Mountebank (DMG 157). We first saw its once-per-day Dimension Door feature utilized in Episode 34 with the Briarwoods (1:19:29). Its final use was in Episode 46, in which Vax sacrificed it to help close the portal to the Plane of Fire in Pyrah (3:05:34). If you have questions about spell use, check out our Spells Cast chart!

What We Know About Thordak and Raishan: Updated!

What We Know About Thordak and Raishan: Updated!

Thanks to Mel (@MonarchFisher) for the art!

We’ve learned quite a bit about both Raishan and Thordak since the initial compendium posts, so before the final battle, here’s a quick summary of what we’ve learned about both dragons in the last several weeks. The initial summaries for both dragons can be found here (Raishan) and here (Thordak). Since some of the information from Raishan is of questionable veracity, here’s her Fact-Check.

We’ve also included a quick primer on MM-standard ancient red dragons and their lairs, but be warned: Thordak appears to be far from a “standard” dragon, so there are no guarantees that these abilities will be exactly what we see tonight.

Vox Machina's Allies Against Thordak

Vox Machina isn’t alone in this battle against Thordak. Let’s take a look at who Vox Machina is glad is here with them. Here at the end of all things. Note: We confirmed all of these spellings with Matt, just to be sure!

Can you give us estimates on the upcoming Thordak fight?

Usually when you’re calculating odds, you have histories of both parties to compare for the sake of calculations. That said, we have no idea of what Thordak…

What are the Vegas betting odds?

….is capable. Matt has given us all a few hints, all of them pointing to something a bit more powerful than a MM-standard ancient red dragon. However, speculation…

WHO’S GOING TO DIE?!

….Ok. Critters, let’s breathe. Speculation doesn’t work well for odds, and you know we try to err on the side of less speculation. You’re welcome to speculate to your heart’s content, but we don’t have enough information on Thordak (or VM’s allies, for that matter) to feel comfortable conjecturing. Not to mention, the dice are telling a good chunk of the story, here, and we’ve seen them do crazy things before (see: Kevdak).
