Mighty Nein Level 12 Max Damage

Mighty Nein Level 12 Max Damage

Thanks to @auwnanas for this art piece!

It’s been over two years since we’ve done one of these, but with the Nein’s relatively recent advancement to level 12, it’s time to celebrate as the party begins to hit the truly high level ranks. For those new to the game, here’s the rules:

  • Only look at single-target damage

  • Ignore all resistances and vulnerabilities

  • Assume all attack rolls crit

  • Assume all targets fail their saving throws

  • Only count actions taken on a PC’s turn (i.e., no reactions or summoned creature actions)

  • Bonus actions can be used only before or after the action, not in the middle of an action

  • Buffs and debuffs from the player only that require set up were taken in previous rounds (e.g., Hexblade’s Curse, Maelstrom Gauntlets, Spiritual Weapon)

    • NO bonuses provided by other characters

  • Equipment limited to items used by a specific PC

With the stipulations in place, it’s time to bring the series back!

So… It’s been a month an a half since the last one of these. You’ve got questions, all right. Updated to 2-56.

Assorted Questions

Are you planning on getting the Search for Grog character sheets of the characters that Travis and Liam played?

To be clear, we don’t “get” the sheets from the players; we reconstruct the sheets based on what we’ve been able to ascertain from what goes in on the games and on Twitter (Thanks Liam!). And yes, we have compiled and posted the sheets!

Does CRS keep track of anything that would help identify at a glance what episodes [may contain content less appropriate for younger viewers who may want to watch]?
Would you ever consider tracking triggering topics (spiders, hanging, child death, discussion of abuse etc) so critters who are affected by such things can be forewarned before they watch the vod?

Does The Dog Die is a crowd-sourced website that does the very thing you’re looking for! Critical Role is already up there, but it looks like the page would benefit from some episode specificity. Any interested critters should check it out and consider updating!

Can you calculate how much damage Jester’s weasel has taken and how many times it survived literal death?

In theory, as of episode 2-56, Sprinkle has avoided:

  • 143 damage

    • 59 fire damage

    • 52 lightning damage

    • 32 poison damage

  • 7 overkills from damage

  • 2 drownings

In practice, Sprinkle has avoided all damage Jester has taken by curling up on the back of her neck in her cloak and dodging during battle.

Do you have a list of all the Beauregard puns?

We post a list of each episode’s media references and puns each week. That said:

Mighty Nein Level 3 Max Damage

Mighty Nein Level 3 Max Damage

Thanks to @MakioKuta for this art piece!

By this point, we know most of what the Mighty Nein is capable of in combat, so time to revisit one of our old favorites: Max Damages!

As a reminder, this is the total amount of damage each character can deal to a single target during their turn, assuming no resistances or vulnerabilities, but allowing spells and effects to carry over from a previous round. For simplicity’s sake, no one gets any reactions, either. This also assumes the completely insane situation where everyone rolls the maximum number on each damage die, all attacks crit, and targets fail all saving throws.

The last time we did this was for Vox Machina at level 20. Level 20 characters are capable of dealing out insane amounts of damage (since, y’know, they tend to fight gods/demigods and are basically gods themselves). The damage a level 3 character can deal out is, frankly, hilariously small by comparison. (Le-vel 3! Le-vel 3!)

The good news is, the calculations are correspondingly much easier, since everyone can do five things at most. You’ll also recall that the spellcasters fall far behind the physical attackers at those upper levels, since most of their spells are area-of-effect, don’t require attack rolls, or are debuffs (or some combination of the three). This turns out to not be the case at level 3. So without further ado and in no particular order:

Triple the Damage

How many times has a character dealt triple digits of damage on their turn?

This was asked about three months ago. Now that the campaign has come to a close and Vox Machina has dealt their last bit of damage, we're happy to provide the full list. Some notes before we get to the answer:

  • This is going back to our damage tables rules. Where, in the Vox Machina vs. articles, we had previously only counted single-target damage, these numbers account for the amount of damage an area of effect attack may have a multiple of enemies affected.
  • For Pike’s Channel Divinity in episode 32, we are going off of the HP for the MM skeleton.
  • For the fire elementals in episode 46, we are going based off the damage that was decided in-game for Tidal Wave.
  • For the ankhegs in episode 99, we are going off of the HP for the MM ankheg
  • For Pike’s Channel Divinity in episode 100, we are basing the skeletons’ HP (25) off of Lionel’s one-shot of a skeleton at 25 HP, but requiring more than 20 on another.
  • For the undead in episode 113, we are going off of the HP for the MM Zombie.
  • For the skeletons in episode 114, we are basing it off of their stated HP (13) during the episode.

Now that that’s out of the way, to the numbers:

Who Wins a Max Damage Round?

Who Wins a Max Damage Round?

Thanks to @TheRequiemMan for this art piece!

Hey look! More idle curiosity! So, if Percy can take out a good chunk of Vox Machina in one turn, who walks away from that fight?

This gets complicated, so we’ll assume everyone rolls their max initiative, then maxes out their damage. We're also going to assume that they will act according to their Max Damage setup no matter how everyone else sets up.

There is are two big choices here that determines who dies before they get a chance to act. The first involves setup. If there’s a prep round before everyone starts killing each other, everyone gets their various concentration spells (including Keyleth’s Shapechange and the twins' Hunter's Marks), Grog gets to rage and enlarge, and Vax gets to use Haste. For the sake of not nerfing everyone, we’ll assume everyone rolls natural 20s on their concentration checks whenever they take damage. If there’s no prep round, pretty much everyone loses a big chunk of damage except Percy, and Grog's and Keyleth's health pools are significantly reduced.

How much of VM can Percy KO in a Single Turn?

How much of VM can Percy KO in a Single Turn?

Thanks to @3rdclover for this art piece!

Calculating max damages led to an idle curiosity, and idle curiosity gets out of hand when you have an abundance of numbers and no roll stats to collect. Here we examine what would happen if Percy just went full aggro on Vox Machina, using our level 20 max damage stats, because why not?

This question largely depends on if Grog is raging, and if he is, if Percy targets him. For the sake of this argument, we’re assuming that VM maxed out their HP rolls to get to level 20, and that Grog took a 17th level of barbarian. We’re also not taking any additional or temporary hit points (i.e. from Heroes’ Feast or Inspiring Leader) into account, and assuming neither Keyleth nor Scanlan have any form of shape-changing magic in effect (Wild Shape, Polymorph, etc.). With these assumptions in place, Vox Machina’s hit points are:

  • Grog: 277
  • Pike: 154
  • Vax’ildan: 138
  • Vex’ahlia: 144
  • Keyleth: 153
  • Scanlan: 180

Level 20 Max Damage Update

Level 20 Max Damage Update

Thanks to @KerriAitken for this art piece!

With the end of the campaign, we’ve got one last update on our Max Damage article, this time with all of Vox Machina at level 20. As we’ve done previously, we’re:

  • Only looking at single-target damage
  • Ignoring all resistances and vulnerabilities
  • Assuming all attack rolls crit
  • Assuming all targets fail their saving throws

We also only use abilities and spells that take effect during a PC’s turn, so no reactions or spells like Conjure Animals, and we limit equipment to the items usually used by a specific PC (i.e. Vax gets the Boots of Haste, Grog gets the Titanstone Knuckles, etc). Finally, since we only know Vax's and Keyleth's level 20 classes for sure (both Druid), we're assuming those with no multiclass didn't multiclass, Grog took a 17th level of barbarian, and Vex took a 7th level of rogue.

Lots of questions this time around! (All asked around the same time.)

What’s the fastest Vax can possibly get?

When hasted and flying, Vax gets 3 Dash actions (action, hasted action, bonus action because rogue) on top of his normal movement at 120 ft/round, so a total of 480 ft/round. That’s about 55 mph (88 km/hr).

What’s the most damaging attack Vox Machina’s dealt/taken?

Taking multiple targets into account:

  • Keyleth dealt 660 damage to the skeleton army marching on Whitestone with Ice Storm. (Ep 32)

  • Raishan dealt 788 damage to Vox Machina, Kerrek, Allura, and Kima with Meteor Storm (minus Vax’ildan, who evaded). (Ep 83)

    • Dealt 552 damage to Vox Machina alone.

For a single target:

  • Vax dealt 109 damage to the mummy king with Whisper, Divine Smite, and Assassinate. (Ep 110)

  • Raishan dealt 118 damage each to Scanlan and Kerrek with Meteor Swarm. (Ep 83, part of the above 788 damage).

    • Note that this ignores Keyleth’s cliff-diving incident, since that wasn’t technically an attack. It also ignores any insta-death effects, since no damage was rolled.

Maximum Damage Update

Maximum Damage Update

Thanks to @rilaisseth for this art piece!

Now that we’ve hit 100 episodes and most everyone is at level 17, we figured it was time for an update of one of our favorite stats: Max Damages. As usual, this is the maximum damage each character can deal to a single target in a single turn, assuming they roll the highest number on every die and crit whenever possible. Using spells or effects cast in a previous turn is allowed, but we’re not taking environmental hazards (like lava or acid) or conditions (like storms) into account. We also assume that the target has no special vulnerabilities, and if there is a save, the target fails. For the sake of everyone’s sanity, we’re not allowing spells like Conjure Animals, because that gets game-breaking and complicated rather quickly. Otherwise, we follow Critical Role’s homebrewed spellcasting rules, which allows two spells to be cast in a turn, as long as one is 2nd level or lower (this doesn’t prevent the casting of a high level spell in a previous round to be used as a bonus action with another high level spell cast as an action). We’re including both Taryon and Scanlan here, but it’s possible that both characters have things that we don’t know about, especially since we’re not even close to confirming Scanlan’s full level 17 spell list (he potentially has access to every 9th level spell in the game right now, which is a little bit terrifying).

If Vax gets surprise with all those nice assassin bonuses, how much damage (on average), can we expect him to do?

For the sake of this, we’ll say that Vax attacked immediately in order to get a surprise attack, and didn’t have time to cast Hunter’s Mark.

  • 42 (Sneak Attack) + 4 Slashing + 8 Psychic + 8 + 16 Divine Smite  = 78 Average Crit Damage
  • 42 (Sneak Attack) + 4 Piercing + 8 Psychic + 8 + 10 (Sharpshooter) = 72 Average Crit Damage

What is the max damage Vax has done?

Vax’s most damaging single attack was in Episode 79 (2:12:09), dealing 102 damage against Thordak. For any damage related questions, check out either our All Rolls chart, Average/Total Damage Dealt chart, or Damage Taken chart over on our Running Stats page!
