If Vax gets surprise with all those nice assassin bonuses, how much damage (on average), can we expect him to do?

For the sake of this, we’ll say that Vax attacked immediately in order to get a surprise attack, and didn’t have time to cast Hunter’s Mark.

  • 42 (Sneak Attack) + 4 Slashing + 8 Psychic + 8 + 16 Divine Smite  = 78 Average Crit Damage
  • 42 (Sneak Attack) + 4 Piercing + 8 Psychic + 8 + 10 (Sharpshooter) = 72 Average Crit Damage

What is the max damage Vax has done?

Vax’s most damaging single attack was in Episode 79 (2:12:09), dealing 102 damage against Thordak. For any damage related questions, check out either our All Rolls chart, Average/Total Damage Dealt chart, or Damage Taken chart over on our Running Stats page!

Critter Art

palchinski asked: Has anyone organized all the pre/post-stream art? I know they have the Geek & Sundry galleries, but I seem to keep seeing ones that aren’t in there.

Organizing all of that art is done by the inimitable Mr. Liam O’Brien. If you see a piece you like, you can find and follow that artist via their Twitter, Tumblr, or DeviantArt accounts! Critical Role Source does a great job of reblogging a lot of critter art, so that would be a good option to check out. Searching the Critical Role hashtag on Tumblr and Twitter is another solid choice.

As a friendly reminder, please do not repost or reuse artists’ work without their permission and credit. Reblogging and retweeting the original artist is fine, but if you plan on making your own post, profile header, or content with it, make sure you have the artist’s permission AND make very clear that it’s their hard work on display. Critters have the capacity for immense generosity; make sure that extends to our artists! Ioun knows they deserve it.

Flameskulls are the results of dark experiments, in which a necromancer takes the skeletal remains of wizards and infuses them with necrotic energy. The product is a floating bonehead wreathed in green flame with very little recall of its past life and a dangerous collection of dark magic at its disposal. Their haunting laughter echoes the halls they protect, providing the adventurers they encounter them a brief, sinister warning.

Individual flameskulls are very weak compared to the might of a party consisting of mostly level 16 characters. The enhancements to their HP were negligible, their magic resistance almost didn’t even come into play, and the encounter ended before everyone even took their turn. On the other hand, even though each flameskull only had one Fireball spell a piece, a high initiative and an opportunity for all of the skulls to cast them all at once with the party all gathered in the same radius easily spelled disaster (though only Trinket had to worry about a knockout). Unfortunately, such a setback spent a lot of hit dice that could be useful later on, as well as burned another hour for their draconic quarry to prepare for their arrival.

While it is unlikely to come back to haunt Vox Machina unless they return the way they came, a defeated flameskull is not necessarily a destroyed one. The shattered remains typically require application of either holy water, Dispel Magic, or Remove Curse. Failure to do so within an hour of the skull’s defeat results in the spirit reforming and reinhabiting its vessel.
