Dragons develop from wyrmlings into young dragons, then adults, then ancients. As they age, their powers increase, allowing a DM to utilize them with adventurers at all levels. In Dungeons & Dragons, chromatic (black, white, red, green, blue) dragons are traditionally evil, while metallic (gold, silver, copper, bronze) dragons are good. Certain dragons are more likely to be found in particular locations, and each has its own personality quirks. Each type has a different breath weapon at its disposal, as well, determined by their color scheme.

Blue dragons tend to be desert-dwellers, and will bury themselves in the sand when hunting, using their horn as bait for curious passers-by. They tend to prefer to feed on herd animals, and will often cook their food before eating it with their lightning breath. Personality-wise, blue dragons are incredibly vain and will not stand for any insinuation that they are weak or inferior. However, they also tend to be incredibly patient and methodical, and when fighting on their own terms, will extend combat for hours or even days. Blue dragons will collect anything that looks valuable for their hoard, but love gems, particularly sapphires, and in keeping with their vain nature, covet valuable and talented creatures they can use as agents to reinforce their sense of superiority.

Monster Analysis: Mimic (Cabinet)

  • Armor Class 12

Halas’s residence had many surprises for explorers who were clever enough to gain entry. The previous chamber had already found casualties in individuals smart enough to unlock the orb to this extra-planar dungeon, but not smart or prepared enough to respond to its defenses. The Nein, seeing the fall of their predecessors, took the appropriate precautions, progressing to the seemingly safer study of the great wizard. The Nein soon learned that the defenses didn’t stop there. As the party ransacked the room, Nott and Twiggy found themselves in the literal jaws of a cabinet… that didn’t stay still like a cabinet should.

Mimics are carnivorous creatures that, like their name suggests, mimic other objects as a means of survival. When disguised and unmoving, they are nearly indistinguishable from the object they are imitating. While most mimics find that adventurers will willingly stick their heads inside their mouths when they take the form of a treasure chest, the much larger size of this mimic easily accommodated both Nott and Twiggy as the smirking portrait of Halas watched. (Smaller mimics don’t innately have the swallow ability with their bite; this beastly monstrosity had the stats to match.)

Despite its size, though, only half the party felt it warranted enough of a threat for their attention. Jester and Caduceus helped the rogues out of their predicament while the other half of the Nein were distracted by exploring the rest of the room… and figure out where their “touches hot plates” warlock had disappeared to. Despite the relative ease of the fight, the mimic did manage to guarantee The Mighty Nein’s staggered arrival to the next chamber, making their next fight much more difficult.

(To the tune of Bon Jovi’s “Runaway”)
On a ship where you hide Nein watching all the sea and skies
They're tough seafaring folks
A touch of squirrel hair in your eyes

All your life all you asked
What can I get this neat ball to do
Well, it has another world
Where you drag your new friends in to

No one saw the crate in which you ate chocolate and hid
They should have seen it in your eyes
Just how clever is the inside of your head

Oh, she's a little stowaway
Gnomish girl learned fast
How to charm in every way
Oooooooh, she's a little stowaway!

Where once the waters rolled calmly by, where ocean's heart did sing,
There stalked a lass with a hungry eye and claws that grasp and wring.

With lantern lure of a glimmer pot, with treasure in their eyes,
Below they swam to the gold they thought would await them as their prize.

Yet each of them went to surely die, their graves to not be found
For Dashilla and her hungry eye collects the lost and drowned.

Merrow, as we’ve previously covered, are the large, evil version of merfolk. They have frilled heads, long fish-like lower torsos, painful teeth, and wield nasty harpoons that can yank pierced enemies toward them. Matt described the ocean-based merrow as having longer, more sallow features than their swamp kin that better suited their environment, though mechanically they were practically identical.

The adventure begins, they were always beside you
Your nerdy best friends and the DM to guide you
And they rise from flames for the battles ahead
Villains beware, 'cause you're about to be dead!

They got magic and flair, they got falchions and cunning
They don't see over there: there's a monster incoming
Inspiration is waiting, rise up, don't think twice
Put your fate in your hands. Take a chance, roll the dice!

Can you answer the call? Dig in deep in your soul
As the legend unfolds, now it's your turn to roll!

Monster Analysis: Avantika and the Squalleater Crew

Thanks to @Janibitz for this art piece!

Much like the Nein’s previous experience with dockside diplomacy, this encounter ended with a conversation, followed swiftly by them setting sail to escape the hand of the present law. The trick this time was surviving long enough to get to the conversation in the first place… And then surviving the trial.
