Happy Halloween, critters! The Critical Role cast has dressed up for Halloween each year for the past four years, and we’re naturally excited to see the tradition continue tonight. To that end, our Halloween Gallery collects all the costumes we’ve seen over the year. Enjoy the treats, and prepare for tonight’s tricks!

We’ve covered it a few times before, but as a refresher: The Laughing Hand was once a warrior named Ganix who fought against the Crawling King. He was captured, tortured, and turned into the monstrosity known as the Laughing Hand. His heart was hidden away so he could never be killed. He was forced to serve as the Crawling King’s instrument of destruction until he was sealed away Post-Divergence by followers of the Moonweaver in the King’s Cage, a temple to the Crawling King that the Moonweaver and Allhamer tricked him into utilizing to make it easier to banish him away to the Far Realm.

Part Halas, part Laughing Hand, all horrifying. In his quest to live forever, Halas experimented with several techniques that didn’t involve becoming a lich, because why do what all the other archmages of your time are doing when you can do something bigger and better? Not content with merely cloning himself, he attempted to create constructs that combined his likeness with tissue from the heart of the Laughing Hand, because if you’re going to live forever, why have only two arms, two legs, and a head, when you can have bigger, better, and more? Only one of his experiments survived, stuck in the experiment chamber for all time without the ability to die.

Caleb's Spellcasting Components

Caleb's Spellcasting Components

Thanks to @yettinim for this art piece!

Is there a list of Caleb’s material components for his spells?

It’s worth pointing out that Caleb now has a wand, gifted to him by Calianna, which can serve as a focus for his spells (though we haven’t seen him use it yet). A focus takes the place of the material component requirement for those spells that have component without an indicated cost and/or have no consumed components.

With that in mind, we’ve compiled the lists of all of Caleb’s spells by:

  • spells that do not require material components;

  • spells with components that are neither consumed nor of monetary value;

  • spells with components of monetary value that are not consumed; and

  • spells with components of monetary value that are consumed.

Lists updated to Episode 2-82.

How far away is TravelerCon?

The current date is Thunsheer 6. TravelerCon is Unndilar 26. There are 51 days between then and now.

How long ago did Yasha commission her bracers to be enchanted? Have they missed the deadline to pick them up?

Enchanter Yun told the Nein that the process would take about 10 weeks. Given Yasha paid her down payment sometime between Horisal 26 and Misuthar 5, as of Thunsheer 6, 9-10 weeks has passed. The deadline is upon them!

Say you’re in the market for a golem to protect your ultra-secret extra-dimensional lair of great arcane power. The base model iron golem is an admirable choice; with built-in magic resistance, fire absorption, an immutable form that’s immune to transformative effects, fists with unbelievable (and magical) horsepower, and a rechargeable poison breath that can deal 80 damage at its worst, it’s no wonder it’s the number one golem for archmages who want to keep their stuff locked down.
However, when you’re as powerful as Halas, you want a model to match the title of Archmage Bane, and the Mage Hunter package included with guardian previewed against the Mighty Nein was designed to specifically handle such threats. Its fist remained a powerful blunt instrument, while the standard sword was replaced with a claw of equal slashing power that had the added nasty side effect of silencing anyone who couldn’t squirm out of its grip (somewhere between DC 16 and 18).

As if its physical form wasn’t already imposing enough, the addition of Beholder Vision™ can really mess up a lone mage, no matter how powerful they are outside the antimagic field. Add flying boots to get over those stupid pitfalls and weird gravity areas, and intruders can run, but they can never hide.

What We Know about Halas and the Heirloom Sphere

Thanks to @TheRequiemMan for this art piece!

What was once a one-off cool artifact to generate a contained dungeon crawl has now turned into an honest-to-Ioun key plot item with much wider ramifications for the Mighty Nein’s adventures. As is our typical M.O., we’ve compiled a summary of everything we know about the Heirloom Sphere and its creator, Halas, along with a compendium of quotes about them.

Monster Analysis: Froghemoth and Bullywugs

Monster Analysis: Froghemoth and Bullywugs

Froghemoth

  • Armor Class 15

  • Speed 30 ft, swim 30 ft

  • Resistant to fire, lightning

  • Shock Susceptibility

  • Darkvision 60 ft

  • Suggested Average, Max HP: 184, 272

  • 189 damage taken, 20 HDYWTDT by Jester

With a name that’s a portmanteau of frog and behemoth, the froghemoth is just that: an absolutely massive frog. Well, with the addition of tentacles. And a prehensile tongue. And three eyes contained in an eyestalk. Also, fangs? Sure, why not!

Froghemoths are largely solitary creatures, though they can reproduce asexually by laying a fertile egg every few years. The resulting baby will be lucky to survive without being eaten by its parent. Thankfully, the passage of time in the Sphere seems to have prevented the froghemoth from completing its reproduction cycle. If time passed in the sphere like it did in the real world, there’s no telling just how many hundreds of froghemoth spawn the Nein would have found.

No one really knows the origin of froghemoths, though they’re likely not Exandrian natives. We especially don’t know the origin of the particular froghemoth housed in the Folding Halls of Halas, or how it came to be stored in their Heirloom Sphere.
