What We Know About Aeor’s History and Politics

Thanks to @Cersonality for this art piece!

Thanks to the Mighty Nein’s distractability, we got some massive lore drops in the last few episodes. We’re going to follow their lead and take a little bit to talk about the ancient Age of Arcanum city, Aeor, using what we’ve learned up to episode 135. The information in this article pulls from the following compendiums:

As the Nein dive even deep into the heart of Aeor, the city’s projects and experiments dot their path with more frequency. Some of this research has been informative or even advantageous to the explorers (as we’ll explore in another article). Other relics, however, continue to defend the city long after its fall.

The Nein had already experienced the serious dangers of tangling with the Aeorian hunters back in the Praesidis Ward. Here in the Genesis Ward, the Nein not only stumbled across the third hunter type in the wild (and not safely in a test tube), but another threat entirely, a monstrous non-monstrosity. Together, these magic-cancelling creatures showed the Nein that as dangerous as it is to rely on magic in a place like this, not even the battle-worn tank is safe in combat.

Monster Analysis: Aeorian Absorbers and Reverser

Thanks to @hanaraad for this art piece!

We’ve already discussed the history and psychological profiles of Aeor’s living science experiments in regards to centuries of isolation, with focus on one abomination in particular. The Aeorian hunters are no different, from this perspective, though their physiology was designed specifically to counter the gods’ magic, especially any that they granted to their followers. Here in Aeor proper, the city’s preserved biological war machines were eager to finally serve their purpose and provide a welcome to trespassers after centuries of isolation.

It’s not in an Aeorian hunter’s nature to attack another, so the blade marks on the fallen reversers were likely caused not by the claws of the insane reverser that pursued the Nein, but by someone who wields swords and is capable of dealing many slashing cuts at once. You know, someone with a tail, an unusual accent, and an atypical humanoid skin pattern. (We realize that this doesn’t narrow down the options for the average Wildemount detective.)

Native elementals of the Plane of Ice that found their way into the colder climates of the Material Plane, frost salamanders carve out lairs and tunnels in ice and hunt sources of warmth for food. They are often trapped and trained as utility creatures by frost giants to both clear ground for their fortresses as well as provide protection. Given the current state of the frost giants of Eiselcross, their pets have returned to the wild and taken up residence in Aeor to feed on warm adventures.

What Does The Mighty Nein Have Left: Aeorian Hunt Edition

What Does The Mighty Nein Have Left: Aeorian Hunt Edition

Thanks to @Madartsyworks for this art piece!

The chase is on! After much planning that actually turned into a pretty successful trap, the main quarry managed to escape from the Nein’s clutches. Despite blocking the trail and having a (very wounded) healer at his side, Lucien’s still not as free and clear as he presents; the Mighty Nein are relatively hot on his heels. That said, preparing for the Tomb Takers’ arrival took a bit out of the Nein, and with four hours shy of a long rest for most of the party, they only have so much left to bring to the hunt.

Although we can accurately estimate which spells and abilities are available to the party, it should be noted that over the course of the short rests, many hit dice were spent, and finally hit point totals were only announced by a couple of the players. With this in mind, we have to skip the current HP for several of the party members, since we just don’t know. We do know, at least, that everyone participated in the Heroes’ Feast and gained two temporary hit points, immunity to fear and poison, and will make all wisdom saving throws with advantage.
